And if you thought this crack team would look only at internal promotion candidates, headhunter firm Heidrick & Struggles (NASDAQ: HSII  ) is there to vet the field of outsider candidates. It's a high-profile contract for Heidrick, but the stock fell 0.7% today anyhow. Best Blue Chip Companies To Watch For 2015

I think the flagship of any portfolio that has a capital appreciation mandate ought to be a superbly run large-cap growth fund. There's no lack of them at Fidelity and my model portfolios reflect what I think are the best of breed in a prize-winning herd, says Jim Lowell, editor of Fidelity Investor.

First, from my perspective, Fidelity's growth funds pursue the following course: Growth and Value really mean the X-factor, wherein managers perceive mispriced value to be had from overlooked earnings growth potential. A broad brush, but it covers the barn and most of the horses inside.

I like large-cap growth, especially with a domestic tilt. In general, it's hard to not pick a winning large-cap growth fund at Fidelity, but it gets a bit trickier when you want the best of the best. Here's some of my buy-rated picks.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) andGoogle (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) compete with each other over nearly every aspect of smartphone operations and ecosystems. One arena in which Cupertino may be winning the battle is fragmentation. A recent story from AllThingsDhighlights that while Apple does a great job of keeping users of iOSon the most current generation, Android users are "trapped" on multiple -- often dated -- versions. This manifests in the relative appeal of each OS for developers, which continues to draw them toward Apple.

McDonald?s Corporation was founded in 1948 and is based in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Kyle Spencer]

McDonald's (MCD) is slashing its 20 piece box from 36 to 20 RMB "灏涓. Given the 4% higher comp rate that McDonald's is already being punished with as it tries to adjust to Asian palates, how badly do you think McDonald's Asian sales are going to suffer if they can't sell chicken?

  • [By Jim Royal]

Let's take McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) as an example. In the four quarters ending in December, the restaurateur generated $6.97 billion in operating cash flow. It invested about $3.05 billion in property, plant, and equipment. To calculate free cash flow, subtract McDonald's investment from its operating cash flow. That leaves us with $3.92 billion in free cash flow, which the company can save for future expenditures or distribute to shareholders.

So when you first hear about employees attending McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) Hamburger University or Starbucks staffers taking Barista Basics courses and earning college credits for it, you'd be forgiven for thinking they're the educational equivalent of cotton candy: a fun snack but hardly fulfilling.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Switching gears outside of the energy sector brings us to fast food chain McDonald's (MCD), another name on hedge funds' hate list. McDonald's has had a pretty tepid year in 2014, down 2.6% over a stretch when the S&P is within grabbing distance of double-digit upside. So it's not hugely surprising that fund managers don't have the patience to stick it out with MCD this fall. Funds sold 2.29 million shares of McDonald's over the course of the third quarter...

McDonald's is the biggest fast food restaurant chain in the world, with approximately 35,900 restaurant locations in 125 countries. Of those, nearly 7,000 are company-owned units. The other 80% of stores are franchised. That model has been a cash cow for MCD shareholders in the past, giving the firm claim to sticky recurring revenues supplying franchise stores with food ingredients, marketing, and employee training. Importantly, McDonald's owns the land beneath the majority of its franchisee restaurants; that huge land portfolio gives McDonald's more in common with a REIT than with the diner down the street.

The competitive nature of the fast food business means that MCD has gotten the squeeze in recent quarters as it tries to play catch up with a consumer that's moving up the "food chain" (so to speak) -- an ongoing initiative to improve food quality and make MCD more nimble should pay dividends down the road. In the meantime, McDonald's continues to execute well, especially given the discount currently on shares versus six months ago. The firm's 3.6% dividend yield should add some extra attractiveness given the prolonged low-interest rate environment that's expected to stretch well into 2015.

It looks like funds are making a mistake by selling MCD early here...

The Department of Defense awarded Philips (NYSE: PHG  ) Healthcare Informatics an $88.5 million-ceiling value, firm-fixed-price contract for the supply of a digital imaging network-picture archivesystem. In so doing, it made progress on a project that's been in the works for 16 years.

DIN-PACS would be made interoperable with not just civilian hospitals in the U.S., but designed based on two truly international standards, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and Health Level 7 (HL7).

The company was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As impressive as T-Mobile's rally has been in 2013, it doesn't hold a candle to the momentum in shares of Micron Technology (MU) this year: since the calendar flipped over to January, Micron's share price has exploded by 207%. And with the way this stock is positioned right now, it's not too late to take the reins in Micron.

Micron is a computer memory maker that until recently was best known for manufacturing RAM for PCs. But the company has spent the last several years building its flash memory business, a switch that exposes Micron to a far more lucrative niche. Flash memory is a supply constrained business -- it's costly for newcomers to try to ramp up production, and the surge mobile device purchases has driven demand for NAND flash memory through the roof. That's helped Micron collect heftier prices and deeper margins for its efforts.

Most of Micron's flash memory customers are original equipment manufacturers, not consumers. Those OEM connections are a big advantage because they keep sales efforts minimal. Instead, the firm just needs to keep creating flash technology that device makers want. The increasing use of flash memory in enterprise settings (such as servers) is another big trend that's helped to propel Micron's share price in 2013.

Top Valued Stocks To Buy For 2015

David Fried, editor of the Buyback Letter, explains how he builds portfolios based solely on companies undergoing buyback programs, and highlights some favorite buyback bets for investors.

Steve Halpern: We're here today with David Fried, editor of the Buyback Letter. How are you doing, David?

David Fried: I'm doing well, thank you. How are you doing?

Steve Halpern: Very good. For those who aren't familiar with buybacks, could you explain a little about your interest in this area, how you got involved, and what impact that buyback has on a stock.

David Fried: Sure. Well, there's been a lot of research done on buybacks and companies typically will buy back stock when it's undervalued.

Now, it may be undervalued given an absolute outlook, or it may be undervalued given the future of what's going on with the company, and, of course, the insiders at the company have a bird's eye view for that.

We really consider the ultimate to be insider buying, because the whole Board of Directors and management, pretty much, has to be on board to agree and spend company funds to buy back shares.

Richard Levine/Alamy These aren't the best of times for discount retailers, but it certainly seems as if Family Dollar (FDO) has become the belle of the marked-down ball. Two chains catering to thrifty-minded shoppers have entered into an unlikely bidding war for Family Dollar, and it's shaping up to be a bit more interesting than your typical love triangle between three retailers with the name "Dollar" in their monikers. The story began late last month when Family Dollar announced that it would be acquired by Dollar Tree (DLTR) in an $8.5 billion transaction. It seemed like a simple enough transaction. Dollar Tree would be paying a reasonable 22 percent premium for Family Dollar. The deal would create a discounting behemoth with 13,000 stores across North America. The combined companies would eventually result in trimming $300 million in annual overhead. It seemed like a great way out for frustrated Family Dollar shareholders. The deep discounter had missed Wall Street's profit targets for three consecutive quarters. Analysts see declining profitability on flat sales for its fiscal year that ends this week. It seemed as if Dollar Tree would have Family Dollar all to itself, but then it got some unexpected company. Turning Down a Fistful of Dollars Dollar General (DG) stepped into the picture last week, offering to pay even more for Family Dollar. It offered an all-cash deal valued closer to $9 billion. The deal seemed to be clearly superior on the surface, but Family Dollar's board shot it down. This wouldn't be the first time that a board sided with a friendly buyout offer to a higher hostile one. Arranged deals often mean cushier positions for the acquired company. However, there was a method to the board's madness this time. Family Dollar declined Dollar General's offer because it felt that antitrust regulators wouldn't let that particular buyout go through. Advisors' Opinion:

It's now two to one among the big oil-field services companies regarding the North American oil and gas markets. Through Monday, Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the largest company in the sector had expressed concern about the market and its short-term prospects, while Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) , the second-biggest member of the group, joined Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI  ) in assessing our continent's activity levels more positively.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB) is expected to report its Q1 earnings at $1.20 per share on revenue of $11.49 billion.

Danaher (NYSE: DHR) is estimated to report its Q2 earnings at $0.96 per share.

  • [By David Smith]

I noted in Part 1 that Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , easily the largest participant in the oilfield services space, is appropriate for subsea investing. The same can be said of seismic. The company's WesternGeco unit leaves its competition in the dust -- or water -- from the perspective of both size and technological sophistication.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

To explore and produce, a great investment is required in tools, and one of the leading equipment suppliers is Schlumberger (SLB). A key to remaining on top of the industry is innovation, and of that the company has a whole load. Throughout 2014 alone, the firm has introduced a microseismic surface acquisition system, a new fracturing technique for unconventional reserves, launched a degradable alloy technology to improve well productivity, a multilayer bed boundary detection service for clastic and carbonate fields, and a rotary steerable system that increases directional control and drilling efficiency. These product introductions have been done during the first quarter of 2014, making a strong statement about the company research and development pipeline. Gurus, however, mostly dropped the stock during the end of 2013. Let us see whether you can take advantage of the dumping and take a large position with long-term prospects.

Multilevel marketing (MLM) groups such as Herbalife operate through independent sales representatives, who earn money both through the sales of product and by recruiting other people to join their team. This business model — which is used by scores of companies, includingPampered Chef, which is owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B), Tupperware (TUP) and Mary Kay Cosmetics — is legal provided that actual products are sold.

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. Its sales outside the US are about 55% of total; this compares to 65%-70% for Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coty (COTY) and 80%-90% for Colgate (CL), Avon and Tupperware (TUP). In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. The cost of important raw materials has started to weaken; as they follow oil decline they could boost gross margins in 2H15. Of note, polypropylene and natural gas are off 17% 4Q-to-date; pulp prices, while not declining much, seem manageable.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Raymond Boisvert]

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) -- YTD return: -1.62%
Heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar has had its performance hampered by a hefty decline in overseas demand for its products coupled with falling commodity prices. Falling commodity prices mean tighter margins for mining companies who lose the capital to reinvest in new equipment from Caterpillar. As a result, Caterpillar's mining segment saw a 23% decline in sales in the first quarter. Construction spending has not increased enough to make up for losses incurred in the mining segment. Cost-cutting efforts and layoffs have been implemented to try to salvage some of the bottom line. All of the above has contributed to a lackluster stock performance since the year began.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , down 1.1%
For Caterpillar, the past two months have been quite volatile, with the stock having dropped about 10% only to recover nearly all of that lost ground more recently. Just before earnings, Caterpillar took a big hit when the bottom fell out of the gold market, as gold prices fell more than $140 in a single day. The impact of gold's decline on its mining equipment business could be huge, as miners struggling with much narrower margins will have less money to spend on capital expenditures for Caterpillar equipment. Yet since then, macroeconomic moves to bolster world growth, including rate cuts from the European and Australian central banks, have given investors hope that commodities will bounce back and that mining activity will resume. Now, Caterpillar just needs to see that turn into a reversal of horrendous sales trends in recent months.
