By Hal M. Bundrick

NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Just how good is the investment advice consumers receive from a financial advisor? A group of industry leaders is proposing a new performance standard to help consumers find out. The "Universal Advisory Performance Standards" would allow investors to compare results based on the performance of advisor recommended portfolios - before the advisor is hired.

A white paper proposing the new performance reporting standard has been issued by the investment research company BrightScope and The Spaulding Group, an investment performance measurement firm. An advisory board backing the initiative includes representatives from major brokerage and advisory firms and industry associations, including Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Morningstar and the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap Gogo Inc (NASDAQ: GOGO) leaped 10.04% yesterday after announcing its first international deal where it would provide in-flight Internet service on the entire domestic fleet of Japan Airlines (JAL)meaning it might be a good idea to take a closer look at the stock along withIridium Communications Inc (NASDAQ: IRDM), another formerly highflying communications stock that hit heavy turbulence and ultimately crashed over a decade ago.

  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

Gogo (NASDAQ: GOGO) shares tumbled 2.01 percent to $28.22 after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock from Equal-weight to Underweight.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Susan J. Aluise]

The attractive valuation compared to other airline stocks, combined with the fact that UAL finally has its act together from the integration mess last year and is posting a profit, make it likely that UAL will gain altitude in 2014.

    Book: Delta Air Lines (DAL)

It clear that Delta Air Lines (DAL) CEO Richard Anderson has DAL firing on all thrusters. Last month, Delta reported earnings of 65 cents per share for the quarter — more than double the 28 cents per share it reported a year earlier, on revenue of $9.08 billion. Those numbers beat the Street on the top and bottom lines.

So quipped SNL's Seth Meyers recently, after hearing about Delta Air Lines' (NYSE: DAL  ) plan to buy 100 new 737-900 aircraft from Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) , outfitted with a new, space-saving lavatory built by B/E Aerospace (NASDAQ: BEAV  ) . Funny joke, but will airplane passengers appreciate the move? Will investors?

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

When most American investors think of discount airline stocks, they probably think of relatively large capped Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE: LUV)or sort of small capJetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ: JBLU) rather thansmall cap Controladora Vuela Co Avcn SA CV (NYSE: VLRS) which owns Volarisa discount airline serving theMexican market. However, any investor who has read Benjamin Graham Intelligent Investor might want to remember his sage advice about avoiding airline stocksmainly because airlines were such a new and unproven sector that had yet to make money. But could Controladora Vuela Co Avcn SA CV actually be an airline stock worth owning?

I don know what going to happen in six months, let alone 20 years. However, I do know that OLED plays in a very exciting space, and Discovery Capital still seems to agree. Financially, OLED stock is solid, and if things go the company’s way in the coming years, it should get big in a hurry.

Best Stocks #3 (Midcap): Copa Holdings (CPA)

I a big believer in Latin America. While it has its troubles like every other emerging market, I continue to view its growing middle class with envy. While our middle class is being hallowed out, Latin America is growing exponentially. The U.S. was never more secure economically than when its middle class was growing, so history has demonstrated what this can do for a country.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Stock prices for United Continental (NYSE: UAL), US Airways Group (NYSE: LCC), and Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL) have soared for 2013.

Pretty remarkable, when you consider the level of debt each of these companies is carrying. When the market turns, as it always does, the heavy leverage will be a tremendous burden on the ability of all of these airlines to compete and survive.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

Though my focus is on the technical, I don’t discount the fundamentals, and therefore, one predominantly fundamental site is included in my list. The initial slides were generated on Tuesday afternoon after the announcement was made that US Airways Group, Inc., (LCC) and American Airlines (AAMRQ) reached a settlement allowing their $17 billion dollar merger to go through.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Insider Monkey]

Last but not the least is US Airways Group (LCC), in which Y/Cap slightly increased its position, now owning around $7.9 million. U.S. Airways is currently on the minds of many investors, mainly due to its plans to merge with American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK). While European regulators approved the merger, the U.S. Department of Justice put a spoke in the wheel, and is trying to block the move. The companies filed a motion to the court to set the trial date for November 12. Amid these actions, U.S. Airways and American Airlines prolonged the outside date at which one of the companies can terminate the proposed merger.

  • [By Tom Sandlow]

Synopsis: As a result of the terms of its bankruptcy and the proposed merger with U.S. Airways (LCC), an equity investment in AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) is equivalent to a series of derivatives on LCC. At current market values, AAMRQ is undervalued by approximately 40%. It is possible to create an arbitrage position that should capture this pricing differential over the next 6 months.

  • [By Jonathan Levin]

Volaris became Mexico second publicly traded carrier, after larger competitor Grupo Aeromexico SAB (AEROMEX*) sold stock in 2011. Airlines in Mexico have expanded into a void left when Cia. Mexicana de Aviacion, then largest based on passenger traffic, sought protection from creditors and ceased operations in 2010.

Best Airline Companies To Watch In Right Now: United Continental Holdings Inc.(UAL)

United Continental Holdings, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the provision of passenger and cargo air transportation services. As of February 24, 2011, it operated a total of approximately 5,675 flights a day to 372 airports on 6 continents from their hubs in Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Guam, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, as well as in Washington, D.C. United Continental Holdings, Inc. was founded in 1934 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) and American Airlines (NASDAQOTH: AAMRQ  ) could be affected the most. The two carriers were already at the bottom of last year's Airline Quality Rating survey. Furthermore, both airlines have a strategy of building hubs in the top business markets. These cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles tend to have the most crowded airspace. As a result, these carriers are likely to have multiple hubs hit with significant delays on peak travel days, which could snarl operations across their systems. JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) could also see a disproportionate effect because its main base of operations is at New York's busy JFK Airport.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, outside the Dow Industrials, airlines had a good day, with United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) jumping 8% and Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) posting a 3% gain. Despite recent trouble in making fare hikes stick, airlines have done a great job of boosting fee income and posting solid bottom-line earnings lately. Moreover, United Continental's announcement today that it will pioneer the commercial use of the Split Scimitar winglet design in a retrofit of its fleet of 737-800 aircraft. The move could help improve efficiency by 2%, which should help United's earnings rise even further.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

As a result, shares of American Airlines has dropped 1.2% to $36.11 at 1:54 p.m. today, while United Continental Holdings (UAL) has fallen 2.1% to $44.27 and Delta Air Lines (DAL) is off 1.8% at $33.05.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

United Continental (UAL) reported its March numbers after yesterday’s close–and they didn’t look so great to analysts who follow the company.

UBS analyst Darryl Genovesi compares United Continental unfavorably to American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV):

Q1 unit revenue (PRASM) growth appears to have exceeded 3% at [American Airlines/Delta Air Lines/Southwest Airlines] despite Easter shift into Q2, which continues to support our favorable industry view. However, [United Continental] now sees Q1 PRASM down 1.5-2.5%, lower half of prior guidance. While[United Continental] noted ~2% underlying improvement pre- Easter shift (1.9% hit), weather (1.5%), and breakage (0.5%), this is still below peers. We see underperformance as consistent with mid-single-digit aggregate capacity growth in[United Continental's] markets, although our analysis indicates that competitive additions will begin to slow in Q2.

Cowen’s Helane Becker and Conor Cunningham believe United Continental must show improvement soon:

We forecast United will be the only mainline carrier to report 1Q14 revenue to decline y/y. We forecast 1Q14 total revenues to decline 0.2%. Clearly we are disappointed with seeing declining revenue, when the rest of the airlines are seeing 1Q revenue growth of ~5%. United’s PRASM outlook for 2Q14 will be very important as investors may choose to give up on the story as their PRASM growth underperforms the industry.

Investors, however, appear unconcerned. Shares of United Continental gained 2.8% to $44.52, while American Airlines rose 2.6% to $36.90 and Southwest Airlines advanced 2.7% to $24.15. The best of the bunch, however, was Delta Air Lines–it jumped 3.6% to $34.73 today.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Gary Jakacky]

I ran a subjective screen of the companies in IYT, using the following criteria:

First, I eliminated the airline stocks. I would never own an airline stock individually: they have a long tradition of providing poor returns for their shareholders. A glimpse at a few ten year charts for component airlines like Delta (DAL), Jetblue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV) and United Continental Holdings (UAL) shows a lot of volatility and pitiful gains. The exact opposite of what investors should be looking for. Furthermore they are oil price sensitive: a more efficient way to trade this is an oil ETF. And yes, they are becoming more efficient with newer engines, but Boeing (BA) is a more efficient way to trade that issue. Second, I looked for companies that have shown (nearly) uninterrupted earnings growth since the recession ended in 2009. Sure maybe a soft quarter here and there; but solid growth. If the issue was a bit in doubt I turned to the company's ten year record, and insisted if growth was negative during the recession, it recover swiftly afterward and share net go on to new highs. finally, I wanted the company's trailing PE ratio to be near the bottom of its ten year range.

Yes, these screen criteria are more subjective than a pure computer screen would be, but this leaves room for investor analysis and judgment, which never should be off the table when making an investment.

Southwest has also stood up to low-cost competitor JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) by coming to an agreement with DISH Network to offer free live television access as well as on-demand shows at no charge. Rather than installing monitors, Southwest will make the entertainment freely available on its Wi-Fi planes, not even charging for Wi-Fi access for passengers who want only to watch the DISH offerings.

However, the American Airlines bankruptcy allowed Virgin America to buy slots and begin service three times a day on both routes. The Newark-San Francisco and Newark-Los Angeles routes appealed to Virgin America for a few reasons. First, the carrier already has a major presence in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Furthermore, Virgin America specializes in long-haul flying and offers more passenger amenities than United. Virgin America has joined JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) in offering free in-flight satellite TV and other entertainment options, which are particularly nice to have if you're going to be on an airplane for six hours. Lastly, Virgin America recently achieved the top ranking in the Airline Quality Rating survey, whereas United was last. When competing directly with United, Virgin America can try to win customer loyalty by providing a clearly superior service.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

The two airlines on the list are JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ: JBLU) and Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV). That any airlines at all make such a list is something of a miracle.
