Top 10 Gas Utility Companies To Invest In 2015

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Fewer consumers were shopping at malls this summer and it seems that fewer customers were eating at full-service restaurants like Olive Garden and Red Lobster.

Darden Restaurants (DRI), the restaurants' parent company, reported disappointing fiscal first-quarter earnings, fueled by lower same-restaurant sales at its two largest concepts.

Darden reported Friday net income from continuing operations fell 37% to $70.3 million, or 53 cents a share. Estimates were calling for earnings of 70 cents a share from the Orlando-based company, according to Yahoo! Finance.

Darden's first quarter ended on Aug. 25.

Shares were falling 3.5% to $47.57 soon after the market opened Friday.

Sales rose 6.1% to $2.03 billion from the year-earlier period but they were softer than analysts' expectations of $2.2 billion. Darden blamed a 3.3% decline in same-store restaurant sales from Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse compared to last year.

And speaking of top dividend stocks with high capital gains potential, next on the list of are Brazilian banking groups Banco Bradesco (BBD) and Banco Itau (ITUB) — two monthly dividend stocks you must consider.

  • [By Will Ashworth]

Cencosud is one of the largest retailers in Latin America. It operates grocery stores, home improvement stores and department stores in five countries including Chile, its home base. Its stock is down 51% over the past year for several reasons, including a deal falling through that would have seen it sell 51% of its credit card operations in Chile and Argentina to Itau Unibanco (ITUB) and using the proceeds to reduce its heavy debt load. Add to that a major devaluation of the peso in Argentina, where it generates a quarter of its overall revenue, and you have investors in a full-on panic.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Well, that answers that question. Questerre Energy Corp. (TSE:QEC) and Crescent Point Energy Corp. (TSE:CPG) likely knew they had some shale-oil mining neighbors in the Bakken Shale neighborhood in Saskatchewan, Canada, but they hadn't seen much of that competition. That's about to change soon. Adequately funded and eager to begin laying its final mining plans, Centor Energy Inc. (OTCBB:CNTO) is going to officially own 55% of a 21,000 acre shale oil property that's anywhere from just a few miles away to just a few meters away from and Crescent Point Energy's and Questerre Energy's operations in one of the oil-richest known areas in the Bakken formation. And to be clear, it's not like Centor Energy is just getting the ball rolling; the planning for this project has been underway for months. Once the property-acquisition deal is inked in mid-February, CNTO will likely finish up its feasibility study and begin the approval process for its facility later in the year. That's pretty quick, but as was noted, a great deal of the legwork has already been done.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

What do Questerre Energy Corp. (TSE:QEC) and Crescent Point Energy Corp. (TSE:CPG) know about oil in Saskatchewan that Centor Energy Inc. (OTCBB:CNTO) doesn't? Absolutely nothing. All three companies know there's oil in the southern part of the Canadian province, and they know exactly how to go get it. The only difference between QEC, CPG, and CNTO is, Questerre Energy and Crescent Point Energy are further along the development of their operations there than Centor Energy.

  • [By John Udovich]

While the Bakken formation is already on most investor radars, few American investors may realize that the formation stretches North into the oil and gas rich Canadian province of Saskatchewan wherestocks like Surge Energy Inc (TSE: SGY), Questerre Energy Corp (TSE: QEC), Crescent Point Energy Corp (TSE: CPG), Keyera Corp (TSE: KEY) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been pumping out a good flow of newsworthy news in recent weeks. I should mention that Canada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation stretches into from South Dakota and Montana) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also contain substantial production and reserves (Note:Excluding oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%).

The acquisitions of Cains Foods and Associated Brands last year and an increase in volumes drove this revenue gain. Also, TreeHouse's launch of specialty teas enabled it to expand its single-serve coffee business. Hence, this company provides tough competition to other food players.

    3M Co. (MMM)

3M is a diversified, mature company and a good illustration of how to tackle the equity risk premium and assumptions about terminal value. Damodaran joked that 12 September 2008 was his "last day of innocence" because it was the Friday before the U.S. Treasury department decided the fate of Lehman Brothers. The Monday after the investment bank collapsed, market premiums were drastically different than the week before. To capture this, Damodaran calculates a market implied equity risk premium derived from modifying a yield-to-maturity formula to account for the value of the S&P 500 using projected future cash flows. He argues that the conventional practice of using Ibboston data for the equity risk premium not only doesn't capture the dynamic premium investors require to invest in stocks over risk-free assets, but it also has such a high standard error as to make the data meaningless.

Today, it almost seems like 3M (MMM) looked at Boeing’s (BA) dividend increase and share buyback and decided to one-up them by tossing some earnings guidance into the mix as well.

    Increasing health consciousness
While I'd never like to see anyone get sick, the novel coronavirus is also going to heighten health awareness. In 2003, China managed to beat back the outbreak by quarantining its citizens and through the use of surgical masks. While antibacterial usage is fine and dandy, it wouldn't surprise me if there were a drastic reduction in disease transmission from the use of surgical masks or respirators. That's where 3M (NYSE: MMM  ) comes in.

It's no secret that 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM  ) is one of the best run companies in North America, and it's also no secret that the company's stock valuation of 20 times current earnings is hardly cheap. The company is best understood as a play on global industrial growth, and in this sense it's useful to compare it to other industrial stalwarts, such asIllinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW  ) and Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR  ) . Withthis in mind, investors need to ask themselves what 3M needs to do to make it a good value.

American Apparel (APP), designs, manufactures, distributes, retails and sells branded fashion basic apparel products, and clothing and accessories for women, men, children, and babies. This stock closed up 6.3% to 65 cents per share in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $0.57-$0.66

    52-Week Range: $0.46-$2.17

    Thursday's Volume: 2.12 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 2.65 million

From a technical perspective, APP bounced sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of 61 cents per share with decent upside volume. This stock recently pulled back from 75 cents per share to Thursday's low of 57 cents per share with light downside volume. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if APP manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of 66 cents per share with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in APP as long as it's trending above its 50-day at 61 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above 66 cents per share with volume that hits near or above 2.65 million shares. If that move kicks off soon, then APP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at 75 to 82 cents per share.

www.workingadvantage.com Employees of governments and businesses large and small can often get employee discounts, on purchases as diverse as belly dancing classes and home mortgages. Better yet, their friends and family can frequently enjoy some of those discounts, too. In general, the larger the company, the more likely it offers these deals. For instance, Southwest Airlines (LUV) offers free flights to both workers and their families; friends get discounts. Many of the larger telecom companies, like Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T), have discounted service plans for employees of the government and large corporations. If you work for an insurance company or a bank, you might get discounts at Macy's (M) or on Apple (AAPL) or Dell computers. So if you have a friend or family member who works for a large entity, you might want to ask them to inquire with their human resources department about what employee discounts they -- and you -- might be entitled to. Join the Club But for variety and breadth of discounts, plus ease of access, the web is the way to go. Sites like corporateperks.com, workingadvantage.com, workplaceperks.com and corporateshopping.com can best be described as mashups of priceline.com (PCLN) and Groupon (GRPN). They offer discounts to some alumni, some students and members of many special interest clubs, societies and groups, such as AAA, Actors Equity and the Zoological Society of San Diego -- and, in some cases, their friends and family members. After finding out if a program is available to you, using it is fairly straightforward. Sign into the site with whatever identification is required, browse the list of merchants and add your purchases to the shopping cart. For example, CorporatePerks offers a Lenovo thinkpad that retails for $700 for $600; the 15 percent discount is roughly the amount of a Lenovo employee discount. WorkingAdvantage has a two-day ticket to Universal Florida for $165.99, a $30 discount from the standard price. Large
