10 Best Healthcare Technology Stocks To Buy Right Now

We have a rather simplistic investment philosophy: we like to buy assets when the prices of those assets reflect a sizable discount to what we believe them to be worth. We like to sell those assets back to the market when the market is willing to give us what we believe is a full, fair price. The catch is often that in order to buy discounted assets, there usually needs to be some fear and uncertainty reflected in securities prices. As the old saying goes, you can have cheap prices or you can have good news, but you usually can have both. When it appears that all is well in the world and the market is driving asset prices higher, we tend to be net sellers. That has been especially true for us over the past year, in large part because there has not been a significant market sellff during that time that has lasted for more than a few days to allow us to make significant new investments. Our strategy greatly benefits from the occasional market break in order to retock our portfolio with new investments that meet our Fund riskverse, income generating mandate. In a way, we need the occasional market volatility that accompanies fear and uncertainty in order to achieve our strategy full potential.

Another under-$10 biotechnology player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Athersys (ATHX), which focuses on the research and development activities in the field of regenerative medicine. This stock has been destroyed by the bears over the last six months, with shares off sharply by 62%.

If you look at the chart for Athersys, you'll see that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months and change, with shares moving lower from its high of $1.99 to its recent low of $1.31 a share. During that downtrend, shares of ATHX have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of ATHX are now starting to bounce off some near-term support at $1.31 and it's now starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ATHX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.40 to $1.49 a share and then back above its 50-day moving average of $1.52 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 384,325 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ATHX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.70 to $1.78 a share, or even $1.99 a share.

Traders can look to buy ATHX off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.31 a share. One can also buy ATHX off strength once it starts to bust above those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Teresa Rivas]

On Thursday, Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY) after its earnings forecast disappointed. Citigroup Kate McShane also downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral on the news, lowering her target price from $85 to $72.

McShane writes that excluding the effect of her conservative assumptions for share repurchases, earnings per share growth looks to be virtually flattish for the next two years. The announcement Thursday night indicates that he company is facing a 2nd straight year of top-line deceleration driven by both slowing new store openings and modest comp growth. Moreover, she writes, she doesn see an inflection point for gross margin in the next year, as she had previously thought possible, and she is concerned about the ngoing increasing negative impact from couponing./p>

She notes that while investments in technology may improve Bed, Bath omni-channel experience, this strategy will continue to weigh on EPS, and she now likes Williams Sonoma (WSM) as a better way to get exposure to favorable trends in home furnishings.

    Her new estimates:

Lowering our FY15 EPS from $5.36 to $5.04 e are taking down our EPS estimates on a slower comp environment over the next few years which will make it more difficult to leverage expenses, especially in light of continued investments in the omni-channel experience. Plus, the mix shift toward lower margin products may persist and the couponing reliance appears to be a permanent overhang. Lastly, the square footage expansion story for FY15 was less than we had expected and the opportunity to get a sales lift from square footage growth may be waning.
