Among the companies with shares expected to actively trade in Tuesday’s session are Best Buy Co.(BBY), Home Depot Inc.(HD) and Campbell Soup Co.(CPB)

Best Buy warned its margins may take a hit in the current quarter as the consumer-electronics retailer looks to keep pace with competitors’ promotional plans on Black Friday and during the holiday season. Realized success
Instead of being caught in a dividend takedown, the iPIG portfolio received a $0.55-per-share dividend from defense contractor Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) last week. That increase was the company's first dividend at its new, higher payment level -- a level that was set after the iPIG portfolio bought its shares.

Taken to the next level, certain stocks in my dividend growth portfolio tend to be purchased more often than others. This will often push the limit on my maximum allocation limit of 5% per holding in the portfolio. Sometimes, the high allocations are a result of buying up to the limit when the price is down. While other times it is a conscious decision to slightly exceed the 5% threshold. Someone who reads my articles sent me this question: Myuestion has to do with the type of investments you tend to put your energy toward. Evaluating a net-net is a whole lot different than evaluating a company that has a competitive advantage and trades at much higher multiples. To me, the net-net evaluation process is a whole lot more straightforward, as there are fewer intangibles (if any) and less prediction about the future involved. I don't have to worry about whether GTSI (GTSI) has any competitive advantage I know it doesn't. Then again, I look at a company like Becton Dickenson (BDX) and I see a highly predictable company with a decent moat selling at a reasonable price. I can look at BDX and figure I might earn 10-15% annually over a long time frame. That's really different from thinking about investing in a net-net where I can see how it's 30-50% undervalued now, but it's not something I'm going to hold onto for decades. It's more of a matter of waiting for that one-time "pop" that will happen sometime in the next 1-5 years. How do you decide where to put your energy?

  • [By Geoff Gannon]

I would never assume that $1 of retained earnings at GTSI (GTSI) was worth $1. It not.

So it would be hard to buy GTSI on an earnings basis. I didn. I bought it for the Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter model portfolio simply based on its cash, receivables, and stake in another company. Those 3 things meant the company liquidation value was higher than the price I paid for the stock.

  • [By Geoff Gannon]

I picked GTSI (GTSI) for the Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter.

And that is not a good business. It lost money in about half of the last 10 years. It had no history of earning more than about 6% on equity over time. It was a truly terrible business.

    Return of the money?
For the past few years, raising money in Greece has been extremely difficult. In mid 2013, only three of the four major banks were able to raise even 10% of their capital needs from private investors and National Bank of Greece (NYSE: NBG  ) just squeaked over the minimum requirement for private capital sourcing. At the same time, the Greek government itself was reliant upon loans from the troika to meet its own obligations.

For instance, AllianceBernstein Income, ticker (ACG), has about 70% of its holdings rated AAA, which is the highest rating you can get. We have some that invest in global real estate.

We have some invested in utility, preferreds, and common. We have some invested in emerging market debt. We try to cover the whole spectrum of investing. When you're looking at monthly payers, you're usually getting bond funds as opposed to stock funds.

Steven Halpern: Now among those closed-end funds is there a name or two that stands out that people should be looking at?

Harry Domash: Well, one that's really good for us has been Reaves Utility Income. It holds primarily US utility and telecom stocks and it's been a pretty good dividend raiser. The ticker is (UTG), paying about a 6.1% yield now and it's a good serial dividend increaser so it's a very good one.

If you're worried about rising interest rates then Invesco Dynamic Credit Opportunities, ticker (VTA), invests in below investment-grade floating rate bank loans. In other words, these are called senior loans.

They're bank loans that adjust their payouts based on prevailing interest rates, so if interest rates go up, these loans will pay higher dividends, so this is a good hedge if you are concerned about rising interest rates.

Another one that's really performed, and it's paying a 6.9% yield right now, Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities, ticker (GOF), that's actually Claymore Guggenheim, holds corporate and government backed, that it's mostly investment-grade and it's paying a 10.1% yield right now, which is pretty high. Those are three that I could recommend right now.

Steven Halpern: Well, we really appreciate you joining us today and sharing your expertise. Thank you.

    Harry Domash: You're welcome.
