Top 5 Shipping Stocks To Invest In 2014

There are signs that the global economy is continuing to struggle slowly towards a recovery.

It has been a series of two steps forward, one step back and may continue in that fashion for some time. But it is ever so slowly getting better around the world. Europe showed some slight signs of improvement this past week and China released economic information that indicates growth is stabilizing in that very important economic region. Mexico raised its estimate of 2014 growth up to 4 percent on Friday.

The global economy is not great and probably doesn't even fit the definition of good, but it is getting better. This bodes well for the recovery of one of the most damaged sectors of the economy. Conditions have been brutal for the shipping industry and the stock prices reflect that fact.

If it could go wrong, it did go wrong for this industry. Leading up to the bust in 2007, shipping companies ordered too many new ships and capacity was far too high especially after the global economy came crashing to the ground. Lease rates collapsed as too many ships were competing for too little business.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Beyond the fundamentals, though, news plays an important role in short-term stock movements. Outside the Dow, microturbine producer Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) soared 8.8% after receiving its second large order in the past week. After getting word of a purchase from real-estate and investment firm Related Companies on Tuesday, Capstone got an order today from Southern California Gas to buy three of its C65 uninterruptible power-source units for use at the gas company's data center. Given the relatively small size of the business, which sports sales of only about $122 million over the past year, orders like this have a material effect on Capstone and also draw the attention of other prospective buyers.

  • [By Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy]

Over the past couple weeks Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) shares have launched into orbit on the news that the company had secured several orders for its microturbines. But 40% in a month? On the surface, it seems a bit silly that a company could gain that much on a couple news stories about sales. For a company like Capstone, which has struggled with sales, this kind of news is exactly what shareholders were looking for.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Capstone Turbine (CPST) develops, manufactures, markets, and services microturbine technology solutions for use in stationary distributed power generation applications worldwide. This stock closed up 2.5% to $1.22 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.19-$1.23
    52-Week Range: $1.07-$2.60
    Tuesday's Volume: 6.73 million
    Three-Month Average Volume: 3.66 million

From a technical perspective, CPST bounced notably higher here right off some near-term support at $1.20 with strong upside volume flows. This stock has been uptrending marginally over the last week or so with heavy upside volume flows. This move has now pushed shares of CPST within range of triggering near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CPST manages to take out Tuesday's intraday high of $1.23 to its recent gap-down-day high of $1.30 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CPST as long as it's trending above its recent low of $1.11 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 3.66 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CPST will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.42 to $1.45, or even $1.55 to $1.60.

Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) slips on a 29% drop in same-store sales in China. Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) rises on an analyst upgrade. Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) falls despite a favorable Supreme Court ruling. And Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI  ) continues its post-earnings decline.

Then again, all-in bets like these are always risky. HTC loves Android, but the market doesn't love HTC back. LG sings the same sad song. And do I need to remind you how far Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) has fallen since hitching its wagon to a single horse named Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Windows Phone 8? Becoming Mr. Softy's preferred partner was supposed to be a game-changing turnaround play for Nokia, but the Finns are still searching for the first sign of market traction.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

Did you see Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) today? The wireless handset pioneer was crushed after reporting quarterly results. It actually beat expectations on the bottom line by posting a narrower deficit than what analysts were projecting. The rub at Nokia is that shipments and revenue fell well short of market forecasts.
